Cesarean surgeries account for one third of all births in the United States. BIRTH! is a modern dance work that discusses how babies are born; how it affects mamas, babies and society; and why it matters.
This is a deeply personal, non-linear, auto-biographical dance that tells the choreographer’s process of becoming a mother. Sara Malan-McDonald’s first two daughters were born via necessary, emergency cesarean. Her third daughter was an unnecessary cesarean in which Sara experienced obstetric abuse; her new baby was assaulted as well. This experience resulted in extreme, morbid postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Though there is no way to undo what happened or how it happened, Sara eventually found a way to forgive and heal from this experience. This dance work is a result of sharing her story.
Sara Malan-McDonald is adjunct dance faculty for the Maricopa Community College system and Arizona State University.
